MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Toronto 3 (13 inn.)
TORONTO, May 8 (UPI) -- Dioner Navarro hit a grand slam
homer in the 13th inning Thursday, boosting the Tampa Bay Rays to an
8-3 win over Toronto.
The Blue Jays lost for only the second time in eight games
after rallying to tie the contest with a three-run ninth.
Shawn Camp (0-1), the seventh Toronto pitcher, took the
mound in the 13th and promptly gave up singles to Jason Bartlett and
Akinori Iwamura. Carl Crawford then launched a sacrifice fly that
brought in Bartlett with the go-ahead run, after which B.J. Upton
singled and Carlos Pena was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Navarro blasted a 3-2 pitch from Camp to right for his first
home run of the year.
That made a winner out of J.P. Howell (1-0), who worked the
last three innings.
Toronto tied the game in the ninth off Troy Percival on a
two-run homer by Vernon Wells, a double by Lyle Overbay and an RBI
single by Aaron Hill.
A two-run homer by Gabe Cross in the fifth and Carlos Pena's
eighth home run of the season in the seventh gave Tampa Bay a 3-0
lead.
